Abstract

This paper presents a simple but valuable laboratory exercise for introductory Vibration or Acoustics courses. Having students design, build and tune musical bells helps create physical intuition for such concepts as resonance, modal behavior and overtones. The project also provides a useful introduction to data acquisition in a vibration and acoustics laboratory.
