Abstract
In an effort to discover new magnetic materials, we report the first observation of long-range magnetic ordering in a compound, La5Mo4O16, whose only magnetic ion is molybdenum. The magnetization was studied by DC extraction and torque magnetometry. The ordering temperature is a remarkable 193 K, and the net moment corresponds to about 0.35 μB/formula unit. This metamagnetic compound has its critical point near 110 K and 6 kOe.
