Abstract

Two experiments carried on an esterification reaction in a packed bed for the introductory chemical reaction engineering course at Rowing University are discussed. The first experiment is the esterification of ethanol and acetic acid to form ethyl acetate. The reaction is carried out is carried out in a fixed-bed reactor with Purolite resin 269 acting as catalyst. The second experiment consists of two reactions, in which the first reaction is essentially instantaneous, the second is fast but orders of magnitude is slower.
