Abstract

Pueblo Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant (PCAPP) Biological Treatment Area (BTA) Thermal Testing was conducted to tune an Immobilized Cell Bioreactor (ICB) heat balance model, and to determine temperature control needs within Bio-Treatment System (BTS) operations. The principal concern is exceeding the recommended BTS 27°C (80°F) and 38 °C (100°F) operating temperature range. The mustard hydrolysate to be bioprocessed is a high-strength substrate, consisting principally of thiodiglycol (7,000 mg/L), with a chemical oxygen demand (COD) of approximately 15,000 mg/L. Thermal modeling of the ICB was developed and showed that the operating temperature range can be expected to be exceeded in the biological reactors. Full-scale operation and testing of the temperature changes were tested without and with biological exothermic reaction simulation to examine the modeling results.
