The Jewish Family in Comparative Perspective: A Concluding Framework

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

This chapter utilizes the comparative framework introduced to analyze similarities and differences related to both contemporary and historical Jewish families in different parts of the world. It surveys the spectrum of diverse Jewish families at the micro level, as they have been presented in this volume and recent research. It details similarities and differences in the institutional organizations and infrastructures surrounding these families and with which families in each of these settings interact. A major variation is the extent to which and how the Jewish community is responsible and organized to provide support and services for individual families, or whether these families interact primarily with organizations and institutions not specifically Jewish in nature, particularly in diasporic settings. Another important variation is the extent to which transnational actors and institutionalized interactions are involved with the level at which individual families function, and the source and penetration of such transnational influences. An even broader level of norms and values and social institutions provides the societal context for opportunities and influences of the broader society, transmitted both historically and cross-culturally, and which filters the impact of events external to the particular society. Here we find a great detail of variation—as well as similarity—and the comparative framework provides some handle with which to understand both the similarities and differences between Jewish families around the current world. The chapter concludes with a research agenda to further understand the interrelationships of Jewish families in global perspective as well as their differences and the sources of those variations.
