Abstract
This paper describes a method to determine the oxidation state of europium by means of magnetic measurements. The feasibility of this method is demonstrated using Eu-doped Y-Si-Al-O-N glasses as a model system. Magnetic measurements at (Eu,Y)-Si-Al-O-N glasses show that Eu is completely present as divalent ion for low Eu concentrations (Eu0.152Y 15.0Si14.7Al8.7O54.1N 7.4). At high Eu concentrations (Eu15.2Si 14.7Al8.7O54.1N7.4) a maximum of 5 at.% could be present as Eu3+.
