Abstract

There is a recognized need for resilient microgrids that serve multiple power system customers in the event of a long term unavailability of the main power grid. While these microgrids have certain similarities to the current single owner microgrids which are intended to improve reliability of service, the resilient microgrids present significant new design goals, operating constraints, and business models than the existing microgrid technology. This paper discusses the goals of a resilient microgrid, and identifies the challenges that arise in the design and development of these systems.
