N2 - We have completed a systematic study of the structural and magnetic properties of crystals of La5Mo4-xTxO 16 (T=Fe, Mn, Mg). The parent compound of these quasi two-dimensional metamagnets orders at 193K. Mg substitution has a large negative effect on both the magnetization and the ordering temperature while Fe and Mn have much a smaller negative effect on the ordering temperature and small amounts of Fe actually enhance the magnetization.
