Abstract
Numerous families are at risk nationwide because of outdated flood maps. The hardships encountered by at-risk families who suddenly realized they were in floodplain compelled municipal officials in the watershed to initiate the $600,000 "Pennypack Creek Watershed Study" in Pennsylvania. The Temple researchers' preliminary maps have identified about 130 additional buildings within the 100-year floodplain boundaries that were not indicated on the existing Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRM). To top this all, up-to-date maps are needed to ensure that flood insurance programs are more closely aligned with actual risk, encourage wise floodplain amnagement,a nd increase the public's flood hazard awareness.
