Abstract

The problems encountered in preparing RE-Ba-Cu-O (RE = Y or Gd or Eu) thin films by existing methods have been avoided using pulsed excimer laser deposition from a bulk target. The fabrication procedure is described. Depending on the deposition condition, disordered or crystalline films were prepared, and with a postoxygen anneal the films become superconducting. The films deposited and annealed on (100) SrTiO3 were of high quality, showing superconductivity with onsets as high as 93 K and zero resistivity at 86 K. The deposition mechanism is discussed.
