Abstract

We study the absorption and dispersion spectra of a weak probe in a closed two-level atomic system driven by a strong field. We show that when the strong driving field is tuned within the transverse linewidth, the Rabi side bands in the homogeneously-broadened spectra are mainly of Rayleigh-wing type (with a characteristics of absorption being dispersionlike and dispersion being absorptionlike) where the index of refraction can be enhanced at vanishing absorption. We derive compact expressions for the inhomogeneously-broadened spectra involving Lorentzian and Gaussian broadenings, respectively. We observe and discuss the physical origins of the large index of refraction at vanishingly small absorption and the electromagnetically induced transparency in the inhomogeneously-broadened spectra.
