Abstract

The effects of S2-glass fiber sizings on the cure of vinyl esters and on the behavior of the S2-glass vinyl ester interphase are investigated. Using the single fiber fragmentation experiments, the critical aspect ratio is obtained which clearly shows the dependency of the interfacial shear strength on the surface treatment. Furthermore, the material properties of the interphase region are probed using a variable temperature single fiber fragmentation technique in which the critical aspect ratio is measured as a function of temperature. A three concentric cylinder model which assumes an interphase region is used to fit critical aspect ratio data and an error minimization analysis is used to predict interphase thickness and glass transition temperature.
