Abstract

The effects of a low modulus interphase formation on the critical aspect ratio of AS-4 single carbon fibers embedded in an Epon 828/PACM 20 resin was investigated. In order to obtain a low modulus interphase region, carbon fibers were coated with polyurethane using a solution dip-coating technique. Single-fiber fragmentation experiments were performed to evaluate the critical aspect ratio for carbon fibers coated to different extents. Experimental results showed that critical aspect ratio values were greater for systems with polyurethane (PU) coating formed at low concentration. The critical aspect ratio generally increase for the coated systems reaching an apparent saturation level at higher PU coating concentrations. The experimental results were also compared with the results of shear lag type models.
