Abstract
Untwinned a-axis-oriented films of YBa2Cu3O7 have been grown by pulsed-laser deposition. It is found that the microwave loss due to currents along the b axis can be understood from conventional electrodynamics while that due to currents along the c axic is highly anomalous. In the normal state, the absorption for the latter is significantly less than expected. Further, the temperature variation of the c-axis loss exhibits a large peak a few K below Tc. An attempt is made to explain these unusual results.
