Abstract
At the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Rowan University initiated a project to provide some measures of substantive help that involved students and faculty working as a team. Picayune School District was selected as the project partner. Working with the director of maintenance, an initial list was made which included: roof repair to Burdie School; siding/skirting repair to a portable at Nicholson Elementary; dugout repairs/rebuild at the high school softball/baseball fields; and structure/roof repair at the maintenance shed. A total of six teams were sent to work in Picayune. The project provided students with uncontrived opportunities to plan and conduct large-scale projects and deal with real ethical issues.
